The CULE International Solidarity Committee recently brought a proposal forward to donate $500 to CAW Local 1688 Taxicab Drivers Relief Account in Ottawa. The money will be pooled and used to assist two members of the Local who were injured in violent incidents while at work and are ineligible for Workers Compensation.
The Executive has unanimously voted in favour of this proposal and CULE has made a donation to the fund. Read more for details.
Dear Sisters, Brothers and Ottawa friends and community activists,
Mohamad Alsadi and I have been working on this urgent solidarity appeal with the Ottawa and District Labour Council for our two taxicab driver brothers, Brother Sami Aldoboni and Brother Abdinsaq Abdullahi, members of CAW Local 1688 in Ottawa.
Both have recently been injured in violent incidents on the job and are unable to work, are without income and have themselves and their families, including children to support. See further details in the attached letter.
At this time, WSIB does not consider taxicab drivers eligible for WSIB benefits, so they have no income from this source either.
We are urgently asking that all concerned activists in the Ottawa community step up to show support for these brothers by making a donation to a relief fund for them.
It is critical that we stand in solidarity with these Brothers and their families during this difficult time by providing some financial support for them as they make their recoveries to health and being able to work again.
Please share this appeal widely with your networks and this appeal will be ongoing for at least the next 3 months, so we urge everyone to consider donating as soon as possible please.
We will be accepting donations by cheque or money order only at this time.
Cheques or money orders should be made out to:
“Taxicab Drivers Relief Account”
And sent to: The Taxicab Drivers” Relief Account CAW Local 1688 250-700 Industrial Ave Unit I Ottawa, ON, K2G 0Y9
If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me or call me at 613-230-4675.
Thank you.
In solidarity
